Creating Community Through People, Parks, And Programs

The Parks and Recreation Commission was created in 1974 "to establish recreational facilities and recreational programs for the residents of the Town of Burlington".

In 2010, with the town's growing population, the Commission decided to invite each sport's association to a meeting to discuss the needs of those sports.  With that information the Commission determined a need for three sporting fields:

• a 90' baseball field for Legion/Adult baseball  
• a Lacrosse field
• a football field

Other items discussed in the meeting were a community center, an indoor swimming pool, and passive recreation.  The Commission is now recommending that the town be in search of land available for purchase or donated that may be used for these three leading requests but open to all possibilities.

The Commission has worked diligently on behalf of the residents and sports associations of Burlington to keep up with the need for facilities and programs.  Countless hours have been volunteered by all members, many also participating in youth sports programs wit their own families.  These include American Legion Baseball, Burlington Junior Soccer Association, Lion's Club Winter Basketball and Little League.

Over the years, the Parks and Recreation Commission has evolved into a Policy and Advisory Board working in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Director to offer a full complement of recreational programs and facilities. The Commission is dedicated to providing wholesome recreation opportunities to all members of the community. Through programs and facilities, they hope to promote a sense of community, family, personal growth, physical fitness and enjoyment.

The Burlington Parks & Recreation Commission meets monthly on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM.
