Programs And Services For Burlington's Senior Citizens
Burlington's senior citizens are a living history of the past. They bring a great deal of value to our growing community and it's our responsibility to ensure their health and happiness. For this reason, the Burlington Commission on Senior Citizen Services studies and recommends programs and service policies for residents 60 years and older.
The Commission endeavors to assist residents to maintain independence in the home environment while providing a means of socialization, peer support, and health and human service programs in our rural environment. We are continuously evaluating the conditions and needs of elderly persons in the community in relation to housing, economic employment, health, recreation, and other matters within this area of responsibility and building those needs into new programs for seniors in correlation with existing public and private agencies. Examples of programs initiated by the Commission include transportation for seniors and housing offered at Thompson's Way.
The Burlington "Dial-A-Ride" program is a town service providing van transportation for our residents, 60 years and older, or persons with special needs. The service is available Monday through Friday, year round, excluding holidays and during inclement weather. People interested in using the van for "Ongoing Schedule" days may arrange for pick-up by calling the Town of Burlington at 860-673-6789 extension 7 during regular office hours. Please call at least 24 hours in advance of your desired pick-up time. Click here to view the Ongoing Schedule in the latest Parks and Recreation catalog. Keep in mind, we also provide transportation for medical needs on non-scheduled days. Call the number listed previously to make arrangements.
In addition to all this, our active senior citizen center provides Burlington's seniors a place of their own to meet, socialize, hold events and enjoy time with each other. A few regularly scheduled activities include:
- Bingo - Monday's at 1:30 PM
- Bingo - Thursday's at 6:00 PM
- Birthday Luncheon - held on the 3rd Friday of every month at 12:30 PM
If you have any further questions, please contact us directly or join us at our monthly meetings held on the 1st Wednesdays of each month at 12:30 PM. You may contact the center directly by calling 860-673-6789 extension 219.
